This was discussed a while ago. Someone mentioned that 13" Minis had gussets welded behind the cone spring mounts where they protrude from the main section of the frame.

The very last Aust Made 13" Wheel Mokes were siad to have been fitted with strengthened rear subframes, however the only difference I could see between them was the addition of a small metal block, through which 1 bolt when through on the outer TA Brackets. It didn't make them any stronger, but it did make it easier to get that bolt in!

Be interested to see what Rover did for the Sportpack Minis.

Here's a picture of one of the 4 gussets I added to an old frame of mine. It's an awful picture but I believe the gussets position is the same as a Sportspack frame.

Just out of curiosity then, is there any benefit to using a stiffened frame on an earlier car with smaller wheels?

Not unless you're rallying it or doing some serious track work.

As the sidewall on a 13" tyre is much lower they don't contribute to the suspension travel like a 10" tyre does. Because of this the cones on a 13" car do more work and transfer more load into the subframe at their seat hence the gusset.

Cheers Tupers. Gotya now.

We do something similar, though not as elegant

We do it so we don't break trumpets, like what happened to one of our travelling companions on a recent trip

the brace helps stop the rubber cone along with the trumpet from trying to tip sideways (effectively bending) on heavy compression. Well, that's why we do it (and that's wht the owner of this car ^ also did it on his return).

Here is a picture of one the 4 re-inforced parts welded on to the area behind the cones (often have a S in yellow or orange on from the factory).  Two for each side of the subframe.    Other than the exhaust hangers and these I am not aware of anything else on the Sports Pack subbys.

Looking at the design of the rear subframe , there are many more opportunities to add strength to more important areas for wider wheel track.
