Hi.

I'm currently sripping the wheels from my rally car.

I don't want to get them powder coated as this is just a waste of money as the wheels do take a hammering and find powdercoat just chips off.

So question is this.....

What are the best and most durable paint options available?  Epoxy primers? Best sort of topcoats?

I want it to be easily touch-up-able.

Thanks in advance

It does when gravel gets thrown at it when hammering down a forest track

I can do all 4 wheels in paint for less than £60 though and they will get chipped so want to be able to touch them up with the same paint....hense wanting to paint them.

I restored my winter wheels on my daily in matt black, i have had couple of scraps etc and i have just sanded the area smooth, then just sprayed away. I didn't even bother to mask the tyros as the matt black paint doesn't show.

The matt finish is pretty forgiving and you can't see where the plain has been reapplied.

Have a look on Detailing World. There are several threads about refurbing alloys. Can't do a link on my phone, sorry.

Usual process seems to be sand and fill, then epoxy primer, sand again, a few topcoats, then a few laquer coats. I have used metalflake.co.UK for supplies before, because p and p is free, but have also seen quite cheap paint on eBay.

Are you using rattle cans or a compressor?

The really cheapskate way would be cheap primer aerosols and white cellulose aerosols from Poundland or Home Bargains.

Using a compressor and proper spray gun so buying paints by the litre as rattle cans are a rip off.

I've seen a few threads on there but alot of them seem to just use cheap rattle cans over existing paint - i'm taking my wheels back to bare alloy so wanted to know if it was Epoxy primer or etch primer that is best to start with.

epoxy is in a different league to etch primer. throw some 2k over it and you'll be fine.
