Today I got home pulled up on the drive and went to turn the mini off and she would not turn off I turned the key and she was still sat ther e running it was quite funny, I even took the key out and she was still sat there running.  so I had to stall her to turn her off but then the oil and ignition lights were still on so Ive had to disconnect the battery for tonight.

has this happened to anybody before if so what is causing this to happen need to sort it as it is my daily car.

its a 1991 , 1275 carb.

many thanks in advance :)

If your ignition and oil light were on with the engine now stalled and your keys are out just part the wiring connector under the bottom of the cowling which goes up to the switch, if the lights then go out the issue is in the ignition switch.

This can also happen if there is a failure inside the alternator.

If you connect the battery and the warning lights are still on, open the bonnet and unplug the alternator (engine not running of course).

If the oil warning light goes out when you unplug the alternator, have the alternator serviced or replace it.

If the oil warning light remains on when you unplug the alternator, focus on the ignition switch as Kernow said.

(The charge warning light will go out when you unplug the alternator so pay attention to the oil light).

I once had this on the wifes metro (aka Rover 100). the problem was traced to damp in the fuse box which short circuited the ignition circuit.
battery disconnection is very wise. when metro had the problem, I'd left it in gear, hoping to prevent it misbehaving. As I shut the drivers door, it fired up (still in gear) and set off past me down the drive, so I had to dive through the window (luckily still open at the time)and heave on the handbrake!

If those check fail slip the fuse box off the bulkhead and see if its corrosion linking the ignition on and a live circuit on the riveted terminals.

Have you been playing with the fuse box on the bulkhead?  When I bought one of mine, the ignition wire was on a permanent live, not switched.  have you swapped these by mistake by doing an unrelated job?

hi everyone I done dklawson said and the oil light stayed on so im going replace the ignition switch and go from there hopefully this will solve it

( I did disconnect the connector at the bottom of the cowling to the ignition switch and the lights did stay on as kernow said to do so  if doing this what could it be, may it not need a new ignition switch ?

thanks

If unplugging the connector on the column fixed it, the ignition switch is probably ok - especially if you can turn the radio/heater off with the key. You could do a continuity test on the switch side of the connector to confirm - brown to white.  To suss the fuse box, remove both white wires and connect them together - your ignition light should not turn on and off with the key if that is the culprit.

Has it got electronic ignition?

solved it, it was wire plugged into the fuse box that shouldn't of been :)

thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions.
