I've noticed that over the last few weeks, I have been losing a bit of oil via a leek from the back of the block.

I have removed both of the Follower Plate thingy, and put new silicone seals in, with some RTV on both sides, as well as having sealing washers on the bolts.

However it still seams to be leaking.

Are the silicone gaskets any good?. The leek seems to be localized to that area of the block, ive put a new gasket on the rocker cover just to be sure.

Now, I know the oil runs back down the the sump via the push rods, but its no under pressure so I can't understand why it would be leaking so much from that area?

Any Ideas? Thanks

There were 2 basic types of Tappet Covers, one used the Silicon Gaskets and the other used cork. They are not interchangeable.

There's also seals that go over the bolts holding these on (and a cuo washer), did you also replace these seals?  They also work best on a bolt rather than a set screw (a bolt has a plain un-threaded section under the head).

Over-tightening them will also make them leak.  Also, did you check that the plates were still flat when you had them off? They are usually pretty good, but always worth checking.

The other places it could be is the head gasket, but that's usually towards the front end (fan end) of the engine and / or the fuel pump, but that's a fair way down.

Yes to all, bar the type of cover. I think I remember they were cork to begin with, but when rebuilt I changed over to silicone.

I'll order a set, worth a try!

Thanks Moke!

I'll see if I can get this right!

Side plates:-

The type that uses the Silicon Gasket were Pressed IN in the centre and they also had a 'cup' type edge where the gasket sits

The type that uses the Cork Gasket were Pressed OUT in the centre and the edge was open where the gasket sits

I believe its the second one I have, well for £3 for two cork gaskets and half an hour of time, I am sure its worth a try!
