At the minute the mini is running worse than a bag of spanners. What is the best way to set it up so it runs good at night with the lights and in day time?

Check the battery voltage under load, then do a full service and check over, replacing where neccessary, what is the timing set to?!

What like is the tension on the fan belt?!

in the day when i dont have lights on the idle is higher but with lights on it is lower.

Battery voltage is fine. Just had a full service near enough. how od i check what the timing is set too and the fan belt should be set up right.

If you have a lower idle with the lights on then your alternator is having to do a lot of work.

Get the battery checked or just put it on charge.

And? You have never bought something that was faulty?

Have it and your charging system checked.

If you have lots of electrics you might need either a bigger battery or alternator or both.

As a guide, you will need a timing light, co meter, feeler gauges and some hand tools to tune your car to a reasonable standard. IMO.

But if your timing is right then it is right.

The only difference is the load on the alternator.

Yep when I had the spots on and the heater on full I would have to pull the choke out a tad at junctions just to make sure it did not stall.

Oh the days of 12 car events around Yorkshire.

Halfords sell timing lights, or you can buy a fancy Snap-on one off ebay, if that's your thing. :D
