Im looking for a new coil but which one should I go with?

Im running a Non Ballast 12v feed and going to go electronic ignition

Whats the difference with normal coils, sports, or flame thrower coils?

Also which make? I've seen Lucas, Power spark, accuspark coils etc

thanks

Until you fit an electronic ignition there is not much to be gained by fitting a "performance coil".  The higher voltage output possible with performance coils cannot be taken advantage of (much) when the engine still uses a points ignition.  If you fit a performance coil and aftermarket electronic ignition you can open up the spark plug gap wide enough to get a bit hotter spark.  Don't widen the spark plug gap beyond the stock recommendation when running points.

Lucas printed on "new" coils does not mean a lot these days.  I do not know which brands in the U.K. are currently considered high-quality, others will have to advise you on that.  However, with a few exceptions I don't think you'll find a lot of people promoting Lucas Sports Coils these days.

I thought Intermotor ones were supposed to be good?

Will you notice much difference on the road with a sports coil? Or is it just best to go with one if your fitting electronic ignition to get the best spark?

Mine was crap to be honest, and remember reading a lot of bad comments about them. I think mapped ignition is the way forward, especially if your thinking of forced induction. If I was buying another ignition coil, it would be MSD. :shy:

Lucas Gold Sports Coils are made in the far east nowdays and Minispares have stopped stocking them due to quality issues and returns, they now stock the MSC 105 which is made by Intermotor in their own factory, have one on mine and not seen many problems with Intermotor products my end.
