the mini in question is a 1993 1.3i sprite

Last night the engine tried to turn over by itself with no key in ignition. I then started the car as normal and then a few mins later it sounded as if the starter motor was trying to engage again.

I can only think it may be a relay or the starter motor itself.

Any ideas please

Thanks

Probably chafed wiring leading to a short. I would take a look at the cabling which runs to the black relay box mounted next to the brake servo. The wires there run up close to or against the clutch master cylinder pipework. I have had cables rub through on that piperwork, leading to shorting out and damage to the relay box itself (burned tracks). I have also had wiring shorting out after chafing on the bonnet hinges.
