
1St To 2Nd Gear Difficulty When Engine Cold? Should I Be Worried

Crunches a little but goes into gear. Once engine warns up and oil temp rises this goes away and have no problems at all with gear changes. Gearbox seems excellent in all other ways no issues changing up or down can block change down the gears too.
Is this just a mini trait when compared to modern gearboxes due to the engine oil being thicker when cold or is it wear and something to be concerned with or am I causing more damage each time.
I guess the answer would be to let the car warm up before driving but that's not always practical .

I suspect it's actually clutch related rather than gearbox....
Difficulty getting gears is usually due to the gears not synchronising, this is most caused by worn baulkrings and manifests itself as a crunch, but if the clutch is dragging then this will drag the gears at a different speed to road speed and also cause a difficulty engaging. The other thing is old oil does not help,
Before you start in the morning, pump the clutch a few times and see if that helps....
If it doesn't then it probably is gearbox, so live with it until you can't.

Generally, I'd say not to worry about it. It does tell me that there maybe a some wear in the gearbox but not to the point where I'd be overhauling it.
The Baulk Rings that synchronises the gear speeds when shifting (so the gears don't crunch) have grooves in them that work much like a the tread of a tyre in the wet, ie, they clear the oil away so friction between these can occur. When the grooves get worn, their ability to clear the oil away lessens, especially with cold thick oil.
