Can anyone advise on the torque settings on the flywheel retaining nut for the pre verto clutch as have been told the Haynes manual is outdated. This is on my 1275gt Mini.

Thanks,

Haynes Outdated ? they would have been the original factory settings ? not heard its been updated and I still use those torque figures, as the cars out of production I'm unsure who would have revisited the torques.

The thread is concerned with the fitting of the pressure plate to clutch boss on a verto clutch, which people do seem to think needs to be done up by popeye, they don't. The same applies to the drive straps on the diaphragm clutch...

What you need is the torque setting for the flywheel retaining bolt, ie the big one which goes in the centre of the crankshaft... which hasn't changed.

While the UK book says 112 ft / lb (our factory book actually says 110 - 115),,,,

150 ft/lb

as a minimum!

Condition of the crank and flywheel tapers is almost as important as the amount of torque used.

Very careful lapping of the two may be beneficial, but I would only do this using a very fine abrasive such as solvol autosol once the tapers are perfectly clean and any high spots dressed with a very fine oilstone. The crank taper right next to the keyway is sometimes slightly proud, worth checking this area carefully.

Also would recommend that after  fully torquing up the flywheel bolt that you undo it, take it out, remove the keyway washer, and then check carefully that the end of the flywheel boss is sitting slightly proud of the end of the crank - if they are flush then no matter what torque you use on the flywheel bolt it won't help any.
