998 Fdr.

Best Answer Guess-Works.com , 31 January 2015 - 04:12 PM

The Mini 30 has a 3.1 final drive, and rule of thumb is your rpm @ 60 is 1000 times your final drive ratio...

So to answer your question, no fitting the 3.2 will actually make it rev higher.

3k for a 998 is nothing and will happily run along at that speed all day long... even 4k is not out of the ordinary for an every day mini.. Don't forget this is not a modern car or a modern engine so don't expect it to potter around like a modern small engined car.

I have a 1989 mini 30, with 145/70r12 tyres, and whilst driving to Mini Fair noticed the revs are a little high for motorway driving. I usually drive like a granny around town. The revs are between 2.5k-3k @ 60 MPH. I would like to know if fitting a metro turbo 3.21 FDR would help reduce the revs at motorway speed, but not hinder the revvy nature/acceleration, and make it a pig to drive around town. I'm hopefully going to MITP in July, and given this has been on my mind for quite a while, would like to get it sorted before summer, if it's worth doing.

I don't mind driving it at 3k, on the odd occasion, but on a fairly long motorway drive it seems harsh on the engine. :tumble:

Thanks. I always thought the FDR was 3.44:1, as stated in the brochure. >_<  :shy:  Must have been another one of Rovers 'unique' ways.

Yours must be nice on the motorway compared to mine, I'm doing about 4300rpm at 62mph!

Can you show me the brochure page, as the Rover parts catalog has it down as a 3.1 and there were very few 12" wheeled minis with the 3.4 final drive.

The Racing Green/Flame Red/Checkmate were the only 998 fitted with a 3.4 post 1984.

Sorry, but it's on my wall now. >_<  I'm almost certain it said 3.44:1 FDR. I'll have a Google and find the page in the brochure.

I'll stick with the standard set-up then, for now. :shy: It was always on my mind to change the diff ratio for better motorway driving, but it's perfect around town as standard. :tumble:

Thanks for the help! :highfive:
