Hi, I am currently replacing my front wheel bearings. There was some evidence that the inner races had spun on the cv joint shaft, so as I had a pair of new joint that I got off a member on the forum I decided to change them. However when fitting the new bearings to the cv joint I am unable slide the bearing up to the shoulder because the is a much larger radius in the corner that the old joints.

Has anyone had any experience with this make of cv joints, I did contemplate cleaning the corner up carefully with a grinder, but now I'm questioning the quality of the the cv joints and if the best place for them is the bin.

Hi,

Just doing this job myself bought two new CV joints yesterday from Minispares, just slid an inner race on as you have and mine goes right up. That radius is very big compared to the ones on my CV joints

Only ever buy best quality or known brand names for items such as these, including the wheel bearings and ball joints.

Sorry for going OT here, but is there a best quality Ball Joint?  I haven't bought any for a while now, but the last few sets I got where not what I'd call best quality, so just wondering if this situation has improved.

It is not easy finding well named product. Quinton Hazell was an OK product but not around anymore although you can still buy their joints from local motor factors, you have to do a search on well known manufacturers like for example GKN. I trust that name and I have found a supplier that sells their CV joints. The Company selling them is known for selling at competative rates but they come in at £85.00, The usual mini parts suppliers are selling "best quality" for £30.00. Unfortunately no supplier name is mentioned so I will opt for the £85.00 GKN part. The difference in price is large but I am OK with that because I trust the manufacturer.

I did see a web site only 3 months ago that listed  manufacturers of ball joints and there were more than I expected but I cannot find that right now, there were some well known names so they clearly are still about.

Totally agree about not being able to find quality parts, especially driveshaft and suspension components QH or Unipart I would be inclined to trust (If you can still find their stuff) though even there, there are not any guarantees quality wise.

Worth keeping an eye out on EBay you can pick quality stuff up for good prices. Been looking for wheel bearings recently thought I had come up trumps with a company called 'Simply Bearings' they state on their site they only sold stuff made by reputable bearing manufacturers, Timken, SKF and Koyo to name a few. So I spoke to one of their phone reps and asked whose bearings were in the kits they were supplying he could not tell me as they had no manufactures name laser etched or engraved on them, so I took from that these were just more cheap bearings.

The CV joints MiniSpares are selling at the moment are manufactured by a company called 'Transtec' well that's the name on the box, and they are made in Italy. First Forward any chance you could put a link up for the GKN supplier you had yours off.

Cheers

Yeah, the QH Gear and the GKN (when we did have it here) was good stuff. Just be aware though the someone has bought QH so the name may pop up again in the future, however, while the name was purchased, I understand that the actually factories where this good gear was made, was not purchased.

The Transtec CVs are very good, they are actually made by another company (I just can't recall their name off the top). I understand that these were fitted OE at Rover.

If my memory serves me correctly I think Hardy Spicer did eventually become part of the GKN Group (Around 1980 I think). I used to work very close to the Hardy Spicer factory in Chester Road, Eardington, Birmingham.

Great news to here the Transtec CV's are good, gives you confidence when you here other people endorsing parts.

It was Euro Car Parts, http://www.eurocarparts.com

There are sellers on Ebay that offer the GKN/Lobro CV Joints, the part number is here on page 444, I think?

I know this is an old post but I thought I'd add my tuppence worth.

I've just bought some Transtec CV joints and have found that the splines have been cut a fraction too deep so there is rotational (radial?) play, and the shaft below the thread is thicker than the C-washer so the nut is tight aound 3 mm before properly clamping the assembly together. The supplier assures me the play is just how it is these days and people run these CV's in all motorsport disciplines, they seem unaware of the other issue that renders them as ornaments to anyone that doesn't have access to a lathe to turn them down to the correct diameter. I've no idea if this is just an issue on the current batch of these or not.
