hi guys and girls! had some spare time this weekend to decided to change the seals in my brake master cylinder. everything has gone to plan until the point of fitting the new seals! i got carried away taken everything apart and giving it a good clean that i forgot to note/take pictures of what way one of the seals where fitted! its the seal in the red box in the pictures below, i looked though a few manuals and from what they say i have it fitted the wrong way around? can anyone help please? also once i have solved this problem, whats the easiest way to get it all back into the cylinder? fit it dry or use some sort of fluid (brake fluid) to lubricate it and help it slide back in?

i did use the search function but i could only seem to find single clutch and brake cylinder rebuilds, no dual master cylinders

thanks, max

It's the mirror image to the one next to the spring so the "open" side faces to the end of the plunger. Should tell you in the instructions. Use some red rubber grease too.

It does appear you've got it on back to front.

Cheers guys I thought I had it the wrong way but was alittle confused as the seals on the lower plunger both face the same direction!

Lesson learnt! Take note of how things go together before going in all guns blazing!

Ah, the traps. You know, I still do the odd one the wrong way around, but then catch myself just before putting them in!

I always lubricate the new seals with clean brake fluid when rebuilding any cylinder.

For what it's worth: take tons of photos as the component is being dismantled!  :D Cell phones are good for this!

It faces the other way because it's there to stop the lower piston squirting fluid back into the reservoir via the top cylinder. Lube up the open end of the cylinder well with brake fluid to aid the seals going in without inverting.
