Hi folks,

I love the noise of my mini. Yes, I have a large bore exhaust on it and I know this will make the car louder, thing is it sounds lovely up to about 50mph, also 70mph isn't too bad but there is a terrible boomy noise at around 60mph. When I bought the car it had the standard exhaust and it did it then too. I have replaced the rubber cones (was on the bumps at the front) and added soundproofing to the bonnet , but to no real avail.

I'm going to work through replacing tie bar rubbers, mounts etc with new rubber, but just wondered if anyone had experienced this and figured out what it is that is making this noise. I assume it is some sort of resonance.

Thanks!

i used to get a droning noise at 50-70 mph thought it was the engine noise. but it turned out to be the rear wheel bearings making a tone off noise at higher speed. might be worth checking them.

My mini too seems quieter at 70+, it has 3.4 final drive and single box maniflow so not as loud as some minis. I think its just a certain rev and load range that produces the noise. Simple solution, get the speed up! Only problem is my mini often struggles to get above 70!

ha ha, yes that is one solution! It's just the boominess of the noise that is so annoying, I think it must be a panel vibrating - maybe the roof. After being out on a run with over 4 hours driving, my ears were ringing! Maybe ear plugs are the answer ?

Sounds like something is resonating at the same freq as the engine at that particular speed, adding something like dynamat to every panel to deaden it would help I recon
