Right guys, we asked about a mini clubman that that looked forgotten on an old ladies drive. I have now spoken to the owner (her grandson) who is willing to sell it. He has started an engine conversion on it and says it owes him 3k, He is asking for 1k for it. Any advice? Is it worth a shot or should I steer clear? This is the text I had from him.

It's a 1.4 kseries with 54k on it. It's had a modified subframe and drive shafts and using rover 100 hubs. Has new adjustable gaz shocks on the front and metro GT alloys. Just needs wiring up. Radiator and alternator fitting. Body work is pretty solid. Small hole in the batty tray. And a hole in the driver side sill. But other than that it's pretty solid. Will need the front lower valance cutting off to allow from for exhaust manifold and then refitting. Will also need the wheel arches cutting out to allow for the bigger wheels but it has 4 new fibreglass group 4 arches to put on it.

You could easily sell all the parts from the conversion for well over 1k, i'm doing a 1.6 k series and its going to cost me around 3k to do it!

Worth it!

What you need to think about is, have you got time/skill to finish the project off, assuming you want to stick with the K series. Projects like this often stall because the owner realises that even though they have done loads of work and spend more money than they want to add up there is still a mountain of stuff to do. You will need sort the loom out and that will be quite a task if you are retaining the fuel injection with the various engine sensors employed. Also you need to make sure what the owner has already done is safe, for example any welding and modifying on the front subframe and the brake conversion. On the other hand you can't buy much in the mini world for £1,000 anymore and the Clubmans are gaining popularity and do lend them selves to this kind of conversion due to the slightly longer front end. If the shell is reasonably sound and has interior etc it is not over priced.

I'm trying to play it cool, have asked to view her. From what I can gather he is buying a house a distance away so isn't keen on transporting it up there and can't see himself finishing it. He said he will let me know when he is next down, or can arrange for his brother to meet me if I'm in a hurry to view.

Good point slidehammer, although I have the time the skill is one thing I don't have. It would probably be a case of paying someone to complete the job for me.
