...before I break something: Is the crankshaft/damper nut reverse threaded in a 998 A+? Because mine is taking some SERIOUS :xxx:  torque to come undone.

by the way, engine is in a 1993 Mini.

You need to fit a flywheel locking tool after removing the starter motor. Then a correct size socket will remove the crank damper retaining bolt after the lock tab is knocked back.

It should not be necessary to apply heat.

As heat can damage the dampening part.

There's only one left hand thread that I know of on the whole car, that's the LH Rear Stub axle.

Thanks a lot, folks. Tab is knocked, flywheel is locked... I guess I'll have to pump up the torque!

Some shock will help - hammer or windy gun, the chances of getting useful heat to the threads, with all the surrounding steel to dissipate,  are about nil.
