the exhaust valve seats need to be replaced, or use an additive

Use additive. Weigh up the cost and how much it will be used.

Castrol Valvemaster or similar, if its a weekend low mileage toy then it will be ok, a car for serious mileage might be worth taking the head off and doing the valve seats

If you go for an additive I'd highly recommend the Millers VSPE Power Plus.  If you do buy it go for the Multishot bottle as it works out a-lot cheaper.

It's a lead replacement, it raises the octane rating by two points, has an antioxidant to stop the fuel from going off and it protects against the damaging effects that ethanol in modern fuels can have on classic cars.

I've got hardened valve seats but also use this additive for all of the extra benefits it provides.

There is a great article in this months Miniworld magazine that talks about Ethanol in fuel and the Millers VSPE Power is recommended, plus it is tested and approved by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs.

Is there something comparable to Miller's VSP that can be purchased in the USA?
