Hi,

I have been experiencing wheel shudder under hard braking sometimes. I was chatting to a friend who suggested that it was possibly due to a slightly buckled front wheel (he said it had quite a lot of run out).

Could there be another source of the shuddering and are there other things I could check before going to get this wheel repaired?

Cheers,

Vinay

If it only happens under braking then more likely to be a warped disc. Take the wheel off and measure the disc run out with a dial test indicator (assuming you have discs), otherwise could be an ovalised drum.

Oh yes, sorry the car has drums. How would one test for an ovalised drum?

Put the car up on secure axle stands, remove the wheels and leave it ticking over in first gear.no special tools needed! Should be obvious if they are in bad shape. Failing that, I suppose you could mount them in some sort of Chuck, ie drill or lathe and check them out.

Thanks man, the first part sounds easy enough to do. I'll give it a shot tomorrow morning :)
