Hi all I have a 1966 mk1 morris mini super deluxe I have owned it 5 years and have been very slowly rebuilding her.I have now got the shell in primer and the underside and engine bay painted and the subframes and engine back in I had fitted a new copper head gasket and new head bolts(studs and nuts) I wired it all up and fired it over after a few attempts it fire up but was spirting out water and oil from the front of the head by the engine number plaque so I removed the head ( i found one valve was slightly open so i removed the valve put it in the vice between some cloth so not to damage the stem ( i had previously re seated the valves with paste and fitted new rubber rings on the stems) i then cleaned it off and fitted a black fiber type of gasket and also gasket seal between the block and the gasket. I had fired it over and it started first time but after turning it off and trying to re start, it wont fire up just turns over.(when I removed the spark plugs the second one in from the radiator was a lil wet but was an oily darker residue think oil? But not sure weather this is still in the second cylinder from the head from the previous problem thus resulting in not firing over again or weather the head is warped my question is really what to do? Do I get the head skimmed or should I replace it with a head thats ready to fit and that is unleaded? Or any other suggestions would be great

So the head is currently on? To get it to go we need compression, fuel and a spark.
I'd check for a spark, set the timing static and give it a blast of 'start ya bastard' starting fluid. That'll tell you it's sparking with compression. If it's running like that it's just fuel to sort.

Yes it currently has the head fitted I have been out to it tonight and found that on the coil the positive connection was just about on there I pushed it home and its now fired up very very small weep of water from the gasket by the engine Plate again but after wiping it away no more came through I need to run it to temp then re torque the head the petrol is currently being fed direct to the carb using the force of gravity (contraption hanging from roof gutter) engine sounds fine think the carb needs a tweek but all good I have Loosely fitted an exhaust from a 1990 mini do the
Standard exhaust fit all models or is there an earlier exhaust for my 66 ? It has a magic wand box if this makes any difference

The late exhausts are broadly the sane from memory. The proper early one does have a kink to miss the big wires on the starter button. Maniflow make them I think. Your probably ok without though
