My mpi can warm up fine on the driveway and settles down to a nice tick over of 800rpm or so.

However on a run the engine never returns completely to idle and is always 'racing' at 1200rpm. Blipping the throttle used to bring it back down as if something was sticking. I've checked the throttle cable and that's fine.

A bit of googling has led me to suspect the idle air control valve so I'd like to take it off and give it a bit of a clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

high idle is often associated with an air leak, this could be the iacv so definitely worth cleaning

next is to check for air leaks in and around the manifold, including the throttle body area

however it sounds like it is related to the engine being warm which would make me suspect the throttle body, being plastic these can deform when hot, difficult one to check though....

could also be sensor related but start with looking for air leaks and clean the iacv and go from there

Many thanks for that, I'll check all of those.

Check also the breathers and vacuum lines for air leaks

Took me hours to track an air leak from the master cylinder once..  O_O

We had this issue with ours and it turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold.

Mine used to have that problem, mostly on long journeys like the Minirun. I 'think' it was something to do with the temperature sender. I used the replacement from Minispares and it seams to cure that, and the fan coming on randomly.

Hasn't happened again for about 7 years. (had the car for 13 years!)

Air leak around the inlet manifold - may need a new gasket. This solved my issue
