My shop manual specifies BP Energrease FGL Fluid Grease to service the steering rack.  When I removed the rack gaiters, the lubricant that poured out looked like 90W gear oil.  Are they equivalent?

Just use engine oil, itsas good as any gear oil, i know that modern gearboxes and steering racks have 10w40 engine oil from the factory

Haha, engine oil would be so much nicer to get in there!  But they actually were filled with SAE 90 Grade Greabox Oil, 200 ml

Corey, as above, use gear oil.  Frankly, 80 or 90 weight isn't going to make much difference.  Later cars used grease but the oil (any oil) will work better.  Just make sure the gaiters are in good shape and attached securely.

To be totally honest. Grease will cost about £20-30.. Then hassle of new gaiters and seals.. 10-15.....

Thanks to all.  I'm installing new gaiters, so oil is the best choice.  Servicing with 90W is not a problem, because the rack is on the workbench.

by the way, my shop manual specifies that the rack oil capacity is 100 ml, not 200 ml as stated above.
