Is a 1275 engine reliable or not?

If it's serviced correctly then yes.

No less reliable than any engine properly maintained ...

Yes, very. I and some of my friends thrust our very lives in them.

 

However, 998s and to a very slightly lesser degree (acameically so), 1100's are also very reliable.

 

These engines are just so simple that there's hardly anything about them that will let you down.

 

But, as the other guys have said, if they are not looked after, then you can expect trouble, though they do stand up quite well to this kind of abuse well.
