Hi,So I have push fit led side lights, with normal halogen main bulbs, but sometimes not always the led side comes on at first press of the light switch on its own,but at other times it comes on with the main bulb, but the main is dim,as if its shorting and obviously should not come on at all on first click of the switch??

The main light and side together work fine everytime on 2nd click of switch.
Any idea what is causing this random, main bulb to light? I have replaced the headlight switch for a new one,but it still does it.

Thanks all,as its the last thing i need to sort for my Mot.

Depending on the age of the car you may have a 'dim dip' relay fitted. Does it make a difference if the engine is running? If there is a dim dip relay fitted then the first switch position with the engine off is sidelights only but with the engine on is sidelights plus main beam dimmed. Second position is main beam at full strength, dipped.

The idea was that the 'dim dip' would be used for driving around town, being brighter than sidelights (which were to be used for parking).

Hi its a 91,also does it with car on or off. It does have the dim dip, wired in and the only thing i did not fit back onto it was a earth wire from the mounting plate to the body,as i assumed it was for something not related to it.
If so,why is it intermittent Without it.?

91 car is the same as mine. The headlights come on dim with the side lights, its just how the car was wired up, I believe regulations at the time. When you put on headlamps everything is normal.

One of the four inline fuses that float about behind the carb is for this so you can remove the fuse if yet like. When I got my car the fuse was blown, I changed it and they come on dim.

Nothing to worry about, its meant to be.

Hi,thanks for the advice guys, seems you were both right, both side and a dim main when running, and only side with ignition off.

Back to where i started again. The fuse from brown/orange wire is not blown from the dim dip resistor, so not got a clue why its intermittent.
