Hi all , I bought an engine for rebuild to get an idea of how easy/hard it was going to be so I went out to the engine yesterday and tried to turn it over with a large spanner and no go , I know the engine had been standing outside for a few years so half expected it not to turn , can anyone advise what part of an a series engine would be more likely to seize up first or would it be a number of places , cheers shawbags.

The ones I've been given like this usually have 1 or 2 rusted bores and I mean really rusted. Some I've managed to save, but there's also been a few that have been scrap too.

Lift the head and have a look or you maybe able to see just by pulling a spark plug.

I would guess - piston ring to cylinder would seize first - esp if ports open or no spark plugs

whip the head off , & pour a little diesel around each piston , leave a few days

see if you can get movement by rocking back & forward on fly wheel , or crank pully

you can tap the pistons a bit with a wide wooden drift /block

as above sometimes you can save the bore if slightly marked with a hone

but often it will need a rebore etc

if you do manage to release the pistons & get them out for inspection - look at ring retaining groove & lands

check clearance & for distortion as the rings will sometimes mark the pistons in this area

best of luck

Hi..Remove spark plugs and pour diesel into bores and leave for a few weeks checking that the bores stay topped up.....diesel will soak through and loosen siezuer....then try and turn engine over
