Detectives have released CCTV footage of a ram raid at a specialist car showroom in Ripley, Surrey in which a classic Ford Escort Mexico has been stolen.

The images show how the rare vintage racing car, which is valued at £120,000, was dragged from the showroom floor after being attached by chains to a Land Rover Defender which had smashed through the glass frontage.

The blue MK1 vehicle from 1972 was targeted on Tuesday, 3 March when offenders broke into the Trackspeed Classic car showroom in Portsmouth road at 9.19pm. They made off with the classic car, which has the number 27 on its side and registration plate of DAD 422K, in the direction of Ripley.

I dont think this will ever be found, if there clever enough. As they must know the car and value

The Escort is so unique I can't see they'll get much for it.

If I was storing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cars I'd have posts in place to stop ram raids

I had this thought....all those irreplaceable cars and just a pane of glass to protect them...Probably not in the country anymore?

Or someone has a Mk1 V5 lying around and they're going to swap the identity over, make it less unique looking and still make a decent profit

What I'm confused about is why did they blur out the faces of the thieves? Surely they would like someone to identify them.

The BIG question is whether it was actually worth £120k or 'insured' for £120k.

Not that I'm insinuating anything, of course.

It's only worth what someone will pay

wouldn't think insurance will pay out the full £120,000 on that

was an easy grab - car unlocked , did they have to break the steering lock ?

or were keys in ignition ?

There was a escort twin cam nicked a year or two back as someone popped in a pub to go to the loo . That was apparantely worth 60k or 80k ...... , i think it was the same one that had been on ebay for a few years at a ridiculous price .....

Anyway , i was glad to see cctv footage of this on the news , i hope they are dumping it .

Sad thing is if they do dump it, then they will torch it.

I'm trying to get my head around how a 1972 Mexico with a Type 49 shell and wide wheel arches can be worth £120k.

There is a 1970 Mk.1 RS1600 Escort for sale in full FIA Tarmac Rally spec for sale at under £80,000 in Cheshire.

Maybe that Mexico is worth around £35,000, or slightly more on a good day! It is certainly not worth more than a prepared Mk.1 Cooper 'S' rally car which would be worth anything from £30,000 to £40,000.

Methinks someone is 'avin' a larf at the insurance companies expense, maybe.

Escort RS1600:

This iconic car was originally a factory press demonstrator. It was converted to a very successful historic race car before being meticulously rebuilt to FIA Group 2 tarmac rally specification with a 2.0 litre Alan Sherwood BDA, Brian Wileman ZF box, ZF LSD and fully floating Atlas. Shell authenticated by the RS1600 Registrar. Maintained and run to the highest standards by Motorscope, with all major components lifed.

Second in the 2012 Tour Britannia, and eligible for many prestigious events worldwide, including Tour Auto. Complete with current papers.

Price £79,995
