Sure you've wired the rught side of the relay? Souns like it's permanently live and main is triggering relay.

They shouldn't come on with the main beam though ...

Either the white / blue wire/feed isn't wire to pin 86 of the relay or they is an earth problem with the relay or with the multi connectors behind the grill.

Blue/red is the dipped circuit, as above ensure the relay is wired correctly if it is then the relay is faulty and not breaking when the trigger voltage is removed. Its because the coil is weak and the contacts have arched and they stick on, seen it before but rare on good relays.

fog lights shouldn't really be wired to the main beam

a fused supply from the starter solenoid via a lit switch is the normal way

Fog lights should actually be wired to the side lights...

Front fog lights to not legally have to be wired any particular way. Personally I would have them available only with side lights but ultimately is down to the individual.

I only want them on when the main beams are on. With sidelights they'd dazzle especially if I drove in dense fog

last time I drove in fog full beam lights bounced off the fog and made the visibility worse, fog lamps are wired separately to main beam usually on the driving lamp circuit.

The whole point (unless your a chav or a want to be audi driver) to fog lamps are they are mounted lower down to normal headlamps and only work (like just about every other car with them fitted as standard) via the sidelights. As in dense fog all your main headlamps will do is be reflected straight back towards you. Witch is why your supposed to use just your sidelights (rear fog) and the front fogs lamps witch being lower down can shine under the fog, so at least then you have some idea of where the road is.

Also fog lamps aren't tested at an mot, but that still doesn't mean that they can be wired in witch ever way you like. Fog lamps, designed to be used as such also have a completely different beam pattern to driving lights with are used alongside the cars main beams.

fog lights that come on with main beam wont have the desired effect, drive in fog and then go to main beam its actually makes it worse, you want the fog lights on dip beam is the normal wiring option.

Sure you don't want spotlights?? Fogs plus main beams = even more dazzle ...

What are you trying to achieve? Better night vision or use in dense fog??
