is there another way of attaching the throttle return springs without using a heat shield, because the exhaust manifold gets in the way?

Pics of the situation? Strange that it doesnt fit.

But yes you can, most of the time there is a small cicle where you can hook the spring to on the carb.

Remove the centre bar off the heatshield and secure springs to where the centre bar bolts on.

If relocating the throttle cable bracket also, then it might be necessary to add a further spring.
