A decent 10w40 will be a far better choice for an auto

Should still be 20W50 no?

You need it to 10w40 due to the torque converter, i wouldnt use any 20w50 oil on an auto.
I'm not an auto expert though, so ask guessworks for further advice.

You should use 10w40 or 15w40 ( actually what you use is more over governed by availability ) as it's primary purpose in an auto transmission is as a hydraulic fluid, and change it regularly.
So if it is not working as a hydraulic fluid then you will be going no where, no matter how good it is for the engine.

I may be getting a bit too old but I thought that 20/50 was the oil developed for the mini auto in the sixties. Mind if it works on 20/50 it will work on 10/40 or for that matter 10/30 as they will be better oils anyway and as they will be modern oils will be better at staying in grade.
I though 20/50 too. The green stuff

Minis in the sixties come out the factory filled up with a straight 30 oil or similar.
We're now in 2015, industry has moved on and there are better fluids available for purpoise.
