I have a 1996 mini sprite. I have basically been hearing a knocking sound from the car. I initially thought that it was the CV joint as it happens when in low gear and sharp turning. However, I took it to a mechanic and he's said my CV joints are fine and they do not have any cracks and are not corroded in anyway. He has suggested that he has a look further as cannot see anything when underneath and I book it in for the day. Obviously this will cost me further, so I was wondering if anybody else has had a similar problem and if anyone has any advice on the matter?
Many thanks,

The mechanic specialises in classic mini's, and said I have used him for a very long time

I'm not sure which side, but I would say it's around the passengers side footwell, when I took it to the mechanic it was a very loud knocking and he said something was loose around the wheel but he sorted that for me, now there is still a noise but it is much quieter. So because it was quieter, and the mechanic had done up whatever was loose, I am ruling it out that it is that

What did he say way loose? It could potentially be a hub ball joint.

Are the engine mounts/steadies in good order?

I think he said that it was the ball joint, but he tightened it up, the mounting points are in good order and I have shuck the engine block in order to see if it was anything hanging off or loose and I heard nothing from doing that

Take a look at the rear mounts on the front subframe - and the floor they mount to. It's possible that the rubber has deteriorated to a point that the subframe can move, causing the knock. There also may be cracking to the floor.

The floor is in really good condition and I think the mounting points are fine, I only had its MOT done two weeks ago and nothing was mentioned about them

Just a quick suggestion, jack the car up an put your hands on top and bottom of wheel andgive it a rock backwards and forwards and see if there is excess play, I had a lot of knocking and scraping from the passenger side wheel last week, turned out to be the wheel bearing.

I haven't got a jack, but the mechanic tigthened up the ball joint 10 days ago and surely it can't be loose already

Unless it needs re-shimming.

Well with the words you have said he said it does not sould like it.

But as it not as loud I would go back and ask about this other noise as it could be something different or the same that is still going to fail.

I'm guessing here it's the steering rack.
