I found that rack noise tended to be when it was unloaded. That is to say straight a head.

Sadly this is one of those times that a forum can not help.

Not because there is a shortage of ideas, but that you have no knowledge/ability/tools to check and correct whatever is at fault.

And its dangerous to drive around with a cornering related knocking.

I too do not have confidence in your mechanic if you are describing accurately what he has told you.

Firstly you cannot "tighten" ball joints.

Secondly  the condition of CVs cannot be assessed visually (lack of rust is certainly no indication)

The noise could be anything that has been mentioned plus another 20 or so things, from a loose wheel to shock rubbers etc etc.

If you trust your mechanic get it back there sharpish (or the MOT station if they do repairs)

Chat up a mechanic and ask them to come listen, shouldn't cost you more than a drink.

I second the possibility of steering rack bush wear. My car had this and it knocked at various opportunities! If you sat in the passenger side you could feel it through the floor on your feet.

I'm sure when his mechanic said he had "tightened" the balljoint, he would have taken out a shim? as nicklouse says, he specialises in minis. "tightening" would be the easiest way to describe it to a non mechanically minded layman? it's easy to get into a habit of having repairs done, then a week later, when you hear another errant noise in a similar area, simply assuming the repair was done badly. from my experience, it usually turns out to be a completely different component on its way out. Part of the, er, joy?, of mini ownership is the constant uphill battle to keep everything working all at the same time? my hornet is a 63', but I reckon 70% of it is less than five years old!

I  had a knocking noise from my front wheels when turning corners, turns out the 4 bolts that hold the hub on had come loose slightly so took them out and put some thread lock on and tightened them up, works a treat now but its just worth checking. hope this helps

Had the same on mine when I took it for the mot turns out the person I bought it off had never done the tab/locking washer in the ball joint and it had nearly dropped out
