Was under the car today changing the selector rod seal with a friend sat in the car moving the gear stick to get in the correct position to remove the roll pin when I noticed that the box at the bottom of the gear stick (not sure the name but the one that has the selector rod coming out and the gear stick going in) was moving a fair bit left and right when the gear stick was moved. How much is it meant to move as I know that it's meant to move a bit but this looked fairly excessive

It will move as it's rubber mounted. There are 2 rubber 'cotton reels' between the top of the mount and the tunnel. Make sure they are both present, secure and not perished. If so it sounds like all's okay.

Put new rubbers on the mount, they're not expensive, and you'll be surprised how much it does not move.... and improves the gear change.
