Specs: 1989 mini

1098cc – Flat top pistons 20+

12g295 cylinder head, ported, double valve springs

Twin su hs2 carbs std springs with needles AN

Cam, unsure, they guy that built it up only told me it was a “sporty” cam

*Must note this is the 1st mot the car has been though with these twin carbs fitted, previous it was a hif38 carb, still have it, will fit as last resort to pass the mot, but i have always like the look and sound of twins*

Morning all,

It’s been a long long time since I’ve been on here,

I’m currently having issues with setting the mini up to pass the emissions

It failed with really high co2 and hydrocarbons, and we found out that a chunk had been taken out of one of the exhaust valves

So we took the head to get fixed everything has been sorted on that valves everything has been sorted on the head at the cost of 230 quid, as the head wasn’t done correct by the person who built it, and the valves have been set to 12 thou

So everything has now been fitted, yet we can’t get the readings low enough to pass emissions

We have used the gunson carb balancer, colour tune, and the gunson gas tool

The mixture screws for the carbs have been turned all the way in and can’t be leaned no more, and its still running rich, on the gunson gas tool it was reading 5 though 6

So my question is anyone think of a needle for the carb that would be suitable?

I have another good set of twin hs2 with the needle of GX, but a friend of mine said that the needle EB should provide enough for the twin carb? Would this be worthwhile to try?

Unfortunately over in Northern Ireland we have very few places with a rr and who are experts with classic mini’s and I’ve noticed very few garages actually have the machine to test for co2 and hydrocarbons

Any help at all is much appreciative

David

lean the mixture a fair amount on both carbs (enough to get the car running) and readjust after the test. Should be you! i should stress that is just to pass the mot, in terms of long term fix, a RR would be best. How is the car running, whats you fuel consumption like?

He mentioned above that they are leaned off as far as possible already

Hi

Yeah as stated they are leaned as much as they can, the screw cant be turned anymore.

The car to me ran fine before the mot ran out, even though i think the exhaust valve had gone, still pulled well, started good, used oil but i think this was down to the poor state of the cylinder head, and the fuel was fine to me wasnt any different

I want to get it under the emisions to pass the mot, then they can be adjusted to run/feel better after it has passed

A rr would be best, but over where i am, their are few mini mechanics, let alone with a rr, its hard to find a mechanic with a knowledge about carbs.

Over in england i know i could pop down to minispares/minisports shop who has a rolling road and all the bits there but over in NI we dont have that option

Just not sure should i swap the needles on the carb which is currently AN to a GX which i have on another set of twins, see if that makes a difference

Whoops, would help if i didnt speed read!

I would have thought that the car wouldnt run if the mixture screws were leaned right off!

Hi Pal

I have just put your car details into WIN-SU and it say's the best needle for your set up is an AAN.

Witch is a slightly leaner needle profile Then a AN.

you are defiantly running twin Hs2 and not Hs4 carbs ?

it may be worth trying to get I though its MOT, then try and get it on a rolling road to set it up properly
