So I'm rebuilding my engine and i have just put the flywheel casing on but just as i give the nuts and bolts that final tighten the gearbox and drive shafts tighten, making it really hard to rotate. With no clutch installed should you still be able to turn the drive shafts in the same direction freely? I  put the clutch disk in on its own and i can rotate, and the drive shafts turn but not very  freely.

Hi,

If the primary gear is hard to turn with the clutch disc on and the flywheel casing bolted up tight, I would think the idler gear clearance is incorrect. Did you shim this gear with the flywheel housing bolted to the gearbox with a new gasket fitted, before mating the engine to the gearbox?

This is an important step which must be followed. Too little clearance and everything will tighten or lock-up, too great a clearance and the idler gear will "rattle" and eventually start chewing into the clutch house and gearbox faces. It does sound like too small a clearance in your case.

Hope this helps!

Steve.

Sounds like a skinny transfer case gasket... but yes as above, you need to check clearance/endfloat on the idler gear.
