I'm at the stage in my build now where I'm getting the interior bits and bobs collected together to see what I'm missing. I have a new black minisport carpet set but no underlay. The car will be used mostly for the odd weekend and the occasional hill climb so it's not a daily and I don't mind too much about noise but the question is do I have to fit underlay or not??

The only reason for the underlay as far as i can see is to keep noise down a bit and to help insulate.

If you don't need it, then don't fit it as after all, it's just another thing to get wet and then cling to the floors starting of the dreaded rust

Ahh yes good thinking. I didn't know if fitting without underlay was the done thing or not. Looks like No underlay for me :-)

Underlay is only good if you want that authentic 1960's soggy carpet smell that early Mini's were always famous for......

I've just put closed cell foam in mine. Doesn't soak up water, basically cuts out some of the rattles. For your use I'd probably say leave it out.

for a weekend toy I would say leave it out, any noise the car does make is quite enjoyable to listen to when your only out at the weekends.

for a daily driver I would still leave it out too as cars like this get more water in them generally.

so on the whole.... leave it out lol

I am fitting newton commercial carpet to my mk1 and are planning on just putting a rectangle of sound deadening in the footwell recesses, mainly to level the surface under the carpet rather than for sound, without this I think carpet will sink in the wells and look untidy after a while.

Well I've put it in with out the underlay tonight and all is good. The trims for the inner sills and arches along with the carpet itself fit well for a budget carpet( all be it from minisport so i did expect decent quality) on to the next part of the build!! Thanks for the advice :-)

The carpet will last much longer with underlay/sound deadening
