Has anyone heard of body shops using paper and cardboard for filler/fibreglass to bond to? I started to strip all the fibreglass off my mini today and found quite alot of paper and cardboard.

Not unheard of. Years back I filled the bottom of the doors of my rusty nova with newspaper and pva glue and then filled from the outside.

I also couldn't get the fibreglass to stick to the rusty arches so I taped bits of the box in as a former and filled it up.
Don't do this at home kids!

An mate of mine once had an RS2000 with the custom front and it had been very lightly bumped on a cold winter morning. 70's plastic not being as good as modern stuff it sort of shattered as it was brittle due to the cold. He used some cardboard as a support and re-assembled the jigsaw with superglue and then skimmed it over with filler and painted it, you would never know it had happened - from the outside.

Not many weeks later he was selling the car and a guy turned up to have a look. They went out for a test drive and the guy was poking around it and making positive noises but then he stuck his head under the front valance. He came back out sharpish, gave my mate an odd look and without a word almost ran down the driveway to get back into his car and drove off. Now my mate was quite puzzled by this behaviour.

Right up till he too looked under the front valance and saw Tony the Tiger grinning at him - yep the cardboard used to support the plastic whilst it was being re-assembled was a Frosties packet and he hadn't thought to remove it afterwards.

I used a sierra for a kit car a few years back. It had strutbrace areas repaired with plastic milk bottles and fibreglass. I could tell when it had been done as they hadn't even bothered taking the label off and you could read the best before date.

In answer to the question, any body shop worth visiting will not use card or news paper. Nor would they use fibreglass bridging filler for anything other than what it was intended.

I have in the past used bridging filler to repair rust holes but i braced the back of the hole with aluminum wire mesh. It was also on a nonstructural area

Bought an MPI a few years ago with, quote, 'a few small blisters in the paintwork, but no rust'. It had 8 months MoT left to run, but we (Grandson & I) knew what to expect.

When we started to strip it we found that the driver's side sill was filled with newspaper and fibreglass filler. The funny thing was the newspapers were only 3 months old.

It wasn't a problem for us, as we had expected to do a serious body restoration, but if someone had bought it for a 17-year old as their first car whilst assuming it to be OK because of the long MoT. I shudder to think what would have happened in a side-impact crash.

Someone i worked with , a designer , bought a rare jave? green mk2 RS2000 , for a fair bit of money back in 2000 , probably 7k or so . He bought it round to us monkeys in the workshop to see if we could lightly dress the rear arch lips in . While i was under there i decided to pull at what was sacking sticking out from the underseal , and it turned out to be a A4

Thanks for the replys guys, I wish I had known about the paper and cardboard back in November as I did take the body shop to the small claims court but it got thrown out on not enough evidence. I will try and upload some pictures tonight of the progress.

I dont know what happened there , i wrote a a4 size piece of unbonded fibreglass matt , but it seemed to have dissapeared .
