Hello guys,

According to the DVLA, my mini has a 1275 engine.. I know for a fact that it's been rebored to 1330cc.

I have measured the bore and its 72mm + a few 0.1mm and i have found a receipt for a +60thou Omega Piston set.

I am a qualified mechanic, I have a level 3 qualification... but I don't work as a mechanic. I've asked a couple of garages near me if they could jot down on a headed piece of paper that "this mini has a 1330cc engine" but they've refused or want to charge me to measure it themselves by taking it apart... (i suggested the oil in the cylinder method but got a no)

If i were to present the above information to the DVLA without a garage stating the engine size on a headed letter, would they accept the CC change? If no, could anyone provide me with a garage headed letter and a statement saying the engine size?

Thanks,

Sam

Unlikely, but give it a go...

But on the other hand, it is only a 1275 engine with a 0.060" over bore.... it's not like it's registered as a 998 or 850... or has an engine bigger than 1549cc, at which point it would be in a higher tax bracket...

PS... if you 're changing the CC, you will also need to change the engine number because the engine number is describing a 1275 engine.

Yeah wouldn't bother, but I would make sure my insurance were aware so they don't use it as an excuse not to pay out in the event of an accident

Never known anybody change the DVLA cc details simply for a engine rebore......only for a significant engine capacity swap as stated.

I also need to do this from 998 to a 1275,but I am wondering how i go about taxing it.Its been off the road for approx 3 years, and when tax discs were issued im sure the cc was stated on the tax disc?

Whats the situation if you have told your insurance about the bigger cc engine, but then have a accident or its wrote off,and they need to see the V5c,that still has 998cc on it,especially if it has a agreed value.....

That's a difference scenario though. The op have the original engine with new capacity due to a debore. You have a totally different engine and should inform the dvla.
Rebore on original capacity unless excessive should be fine.
Different engine should get the log book updated on my opinion.
Both should tell insurance though not worth the risk.

Yeah I realised after I posted, insurance will be informed once I get some. Will send the logbook off,but I guess I need proof from a garage that its 1275.

A long shot but what year is your mini as if it's pre '73 then you simply tell the DVLA of any cc change without the need for any evidence.

It is not usual to tell either DVLA or the insurer of a standard re-bore. A standard re-bore is one which uses the available re-bore sizes in the manufacturer's workshop manual.

After all, there used to be 'Gold-Seal' engines from BMC which were re-bored and re-conditioned. A dealer would fit one of these when needed and they were never standard bore as they were re-conditioned. No one ever took the head off the measure after the engine was fitted by a dealer and was running.

It's called a standard service re-bore.

It shouldn't really a big deal to the DVLA, as both a 998 and a 1275 are in the same road tax band, so it's not as if you'd be commiting tax fraud if you were to tax it as a 998 until you get the change registered. In your case it's more of an admin formality due to the legal requirement to advise DVLA of a change of engine, regardless of size. So long as you've declared to your insurer that the car is modified and has a larger sized engine than standard, then there shouldn't realy be an issue in the event of a claim, regardless of what is listed on the V5c. That said, it's still worth getting the change registered with the DVLA though, to avoid any delays/ issues etc, in the event of a claim, theft or selling etc, it is a legal requirement after all.

I was quite lucky that my local garage is Mini friendly - my car had been changed from 998 to 1275 by PO who hadnt changed V5 - all I did was pop to the garage, open the bonnet, the mechanic (former Mini owner) took one look at the engine number and said 'Yip, thats a 1275, I'll just go and do a letter for you' - took ten minutes and didnt even charge me a penny. Sent that and the V5 off to DVLA and Bob's yer aunty all complete.
