I have literally 100's of diff side covers...

With regards removing pot joints, I use one method which works 99% of the time....

One cold chisel against the back of the pot, and strike hard in the direction of removal, most of the time, one strike is all that's required, occasionally two, and that 1% of the time, more drastic action may need to be taken.

It's always best to remove the pots before you remove the diff from the gearbox.

Guru, you have a fabulous website and very reasonable prices!  Had I known, I would have been less concerned about damaging the side cover.

I'm new to this forum and would appreciate some help regarding inner CV / offset sphere joints. When removing mine from an 1992 SPI Cooper to replace the oil seals in the dif oil seal housing plates, I found no plastic oil seals ('fingers') between the pot shaft and dif oil seal housing plate. The Rover manual shows that these should be fitted, so is it possible that these were dispensed with at some point, or have these been left off at some point in the cars history? If these are essential, can anyone advise me where they can be obtained, as I cannot find then on the mini spares or mini sport websites?

Thanks

Hoppy

They are actually flingers because they fling stray oil and muck. We have had to live without them for many years now, and I can't say that there have been any problems as a result.

I have never been aware of a flinger on the inner pot CV but there certainly used to be one on the outer CV to keep water away from the inner seal.

It's there in the schematic diagrams but have only ever once found them to be fitted...and have never had issues without them....so probably deleted as a superfluous part..

I last saw them in about 1978. My Mini had covered nearly 100k miles (with more yet to come!) and I needed the engine out for some work. One was missing, the other cracked. No spares available, even then, which I think puts their importance in its true perspective. as the car did nearly another 100k without them.
