Hello  :D

Not being the best at car electrics I was stumped by this whilst stripping out the engine bay:

Looks like some big ass resistor bank... but what are they for?

Any help appreciated as always   ;D

a guess - this is near to where the dim dip resistor should  be on some cars ?

has it got the resistor near the rad ?

what age is the car ?

was it an export model at some time ?

It does look like it could be someones slightly Heath Robinson style replacement for the dim dip resistor.

Where do the blue wires go.. They're not standard (or at least not there!)

It's probably a resistor pack for a multi speed fan. How many positions for the fan switch have?

I had a VW whose multi-speed fan was controlled by a single, multi-tap resistor.  When it failed, I replaced it with a setup very much like what is shown in your photographs.  As Tupers said, maybe what you have is someone's add-on resistor bank to operate the ventilation fan at low speed.

It looks like there are 4 wires going to that switch? If so its going to be a resistor pack for a multi speed fan. That it's just on-off now suggests that the resistor pack is dead (happens in mant other cars, certainly Vauxhalls and Hondas fry theirs quite often).
