Has anyone checked the distributor timing on an SPI? I know the actual 'timing' is via the CAS on flywheel but I'm talking about getting the distributor in exactly the right spot. The manual is a bit vague in this respect, it just shows the rotor arm at a certain angle and thats it. Shouldn't I be able to use timing light on pointer on crank pulley?

Does not really matter, there is no exact spot as there are no points or electronics in the dizzy itself to be affected by the angle of the dizzy, the only thing which matters is the end of the rotor is in contact with the terminals on the dizzy cap, when the ECU signals the coil to fire.

So if you want to check with a multimeter, check for continuity with the engine set to TDC or just BTDC between the middle of the dizzy cap and terminal for No1 sparkie..

You can use a timing light on the timing marks, however, rotating the dizzy will have no effect until you move rotate it so far that the circuit through the rotor arm is no longer in contact with the plug lead terminal, at which point you loose the spark and the engine dies.

Thanks GG, I didn't think about the trigger source. Silly me.
That explains the rotor angle diagram in the manual, its probably accurate enough. I'll check it today. The car appears to run fine, its just that i had dist out to paint engine and put it back in same position as removed. Just thought it worth checking. Thanks again.
