I have an issue with my speedometer. The mini is a 77, and the gearbox and speedo are the originals.

But the speedo reads 20km/h too much - at all speeds. If I drive 60km/h it shows 80km/h, if I drive 100km/h it shows 120km/h and so on. The milage is right - confirmed with GPS and a known distance - it's just the km/h reading that is just too high. :/

What can I do about it? It's starting to get on my nerves..

speedycables.com can calibrate it :)

Or mark where the correct speeds are on the gauge and get sticky fingers to make you a new face :)

Option#2 never going to happen!

Option#1 - can the speedo be calibrated? That might explain it. The previous owner had to remove the speedo and "help" it turn the milage from 15999 to 16000 - since the speedo did not want to do it. It just clicked. Maybe ha has skewed the calibration taking it apart?

Fair enough :P

I think what they do it put weights on the needle or something not 100% sure on that but it defiantly can be calibrated.

Does anybody know if the needle has some "preload" once it sits at the needle stop (0km/h)? If the previous owner removed the needle, not taking the preload into account - it would be off, and IMHO it would be by the same "distance" on the speedo independent of the speed?

The Central Mounted Speedos had a mark on the face where the needle should be fitted to and than moved past the stop for the 'preload', you can see that mark near the HB Lamp on this Speedo

On the late 2 and 3 clock set up there is a single dot for this, though I think the latest Japanese made ones didn't have anything. If you feel it's 20 km/h out, remove the clock, wind it to say 40 km/h, carefully hold the aluminum disc, and then push the needle down to read 20 km/h.

Excellent! I did not know about that marking. I'll try to remove the speedo and see if the preload is ok. Thank you very much.
