Catalytic Converter Direction

Best Answer glowpot , 30 March 2015 - 09:27 AM

Back to the main subject ;-) I've fitted the cat, and can confirm that the flange/coupling with the chamfered edge fits towards the rear section of the exhaust pipe.

Does a catalytic converter need to be fitted in a particular direction? There is no direction marker on the casing.

However, the flange at one end is flat, while the other has a chamfer cut in to it. I'm assuming the flat end fits to the downpipe, while the chamfered end fits on to the exhaust side (which has a rounded edge to the pipe).

Having spent 2 hours last night struggling with an MPi exhaust and decat pipe.....

the exhaust end (outlet) of the cat is the one with the chamfer - the other end fits the downpipes.

the chamfer is there for std exhausts that have a flared end that fits into the chamfer and is clamped by the plate.

I will be interested to hear how long your aftermarket cat lasts.

Cheers, thanks for confirming my assumptions!

And if it lasts the 30 minute MOT retest I'll be happy!

If Minispares are correct, then only one gasket is needed, it is between the downpipe and cat. UNLESS you have an early Cooper or RSP:-

"Metal gasket for the catalyst and is the same both ends for Cooper 1275CC RSP early cars, but only fitted on the front to later cars. If you cannot fit this gasket on the rear your car does not need one."

(If you have a chamfer/flared edge between the Cat and the exhaust pipe, a gasket wont be used, as alext describes above.)

Don't know why people bother fitting decat pipes, they make very little/no difference to performance, and you have to put it back on every year for the MOT.

In some cases the vehicle will run better with a new cat instead of a decat.

Plus with VOSA making more of a stand these days if you're pulled over on the road side and emissions checked you've not got much of a leg to stand on.

Decat makes a big difference on an MPi....

I beg to differ, I removed a decat from an MPi and put a brand new cat on it, as it was required for the MOT...

Drove like a different car
