I have just swapped an old (something like 20 year old) but failed Facet Redtop fuel pump for a new one.  This new one seems to "tick" all the time, rather than "ticking" until pressure has built, then only "ticking" on demand.  The car does not currently have a pressure regulator, and the excess pressure generated has now found that the also 20 year old fuel pipes, fittings and filter are also lacking and I have a number of leaks to resolve.

Does any one know if the design of the Facet pumps has changed in the last 20 years and they are constant operation rather than on-demand ??  Or am I just unlucky and have to both replace the 20 year old pipes (seems like a good idea anyway) and have to install a pressure regulator as well ??

Thanks in advance.

Phil.

If your hoses have gone then it will keep ticking as it try's to keep pressure.

Fuel has changed a lot over the last 20 years and you should change any rubbers as they will be dead.

Pressure regulators. If your carb can't take the pressure from the pump you need one.

SU carbs will be over pressured by a red top as will most.

Would not have thought the design has changed much as there is nothing to them.

I have found the new ones to be hit & miss , both barrel & the box types , sometimes not priming

the new ones are solid state - they don't have points , & aren't pressure sensitive , but seem to need 12v +

the old ones were more tolerant with lower voltages - when cranking

new ones tick all the time - can be annoying with solid fit or firm mountings

The car is an MGB with a Rover V8 on SU carbs.  The old pump was from 1995 so I guess was the points type.  The pipework was sound until I've changed the pump, no reason to suspect it previously but it's the same age as the pump.  The pump took a little while to prime, but it appeared to be ok, just didn't stop "ticking".  I listened for the tell-tail sound of fuel escaping the carb overflows and it hitting the garage floor, and all was good so i stuck the engine up.  I noticed the fuel leak up front when doing my routine leak-checks, it looks like fuel has escaped from the in-line plastic filter, so i'll have all that off and replace the braided hoses for plain and check the filter for splits, but I guess I'll probably end up with a FilterKing up front.

Hey ho !!

but it is only a tick once in a while rather than a regular constant tick.

Actually, no. about 1 - 2 ticks per second, from the time of turning the key on until turning it off. Not at all like an SU.

Does not sound like mine. Turn on ignition and tick tick tick to get pressure. Then an odd tick as and when untill engine start.

I am not familiar with a "red top" Facet but I have used the silver tops, and the metal brick pumps.  As Spider said, all the ones I have used tick constantly.  The only electric pumps I have seen that stop ticking are the SU and SU copies.

Regardless of ticking, remember that Facet makes a huge number of pumps with different pressure ratings.  They all look alike within a family.  Measure the fuel pressure that your pump delivers and if necessary fit a regulator as nicklouse suggested.

The old facet pump behaved like an SU pump, pulsed to prime the carbs then only "ticked" once in a while to maintain pressure. The new one pulses all the time. The old one was the biggest one facet do, the Redtop with 6-8psi and some ridiculous fuel flow. The engine doesn't generate enough power to need a pump that big, but I thought (how silly of me........) for ease of installation I'd replace like-for-like. Now it seens I either have to replace all the fuel lines (good practice I know) and get a Filterking regulator like I have on my track mini. Or get a different pump. It just irks me, I am irked !
