I've picked up a good mg metro head from fleabay at a reasonable price, good condition, however i have no history of the engine. How can I tell if its unleaded?. I've popped out an exhaust valve and can't see any obvious insert. There,s no obvious seat damage or recession. It has the bigger valves.

I think the earlier MG Metro heads with the larger 35.5mm inlet valve were for use with leaded petrol and did not have hardened valve seats fitted.

Someone else should be able to confirm.

Yes. I think it was 84 or 86 that the hardened seats started to be factory fitted.

Mid '89 factory inserts were fitted mainstream. No head with 35.7mm intakes left the factory they all had the smaller 33.2mm intake valve.

There are many heads that have since been convereted. They can be easily determined by a visible insert. If no insert, it will be safe to say it is not unleaded tolerant.
