Hi all,

I have a standard walnut dash and looking at installing a 52mm hole for a gauge as I do not have any at the moment. Would it be okay to drill this hole and not cause any damage to the dash or would it crack etc?

If it would cause damage, where would the best place to put a gauge which is visible.

Opinions welcome :-)

Hi

You might find the lacquer and veneer split when you drill the hole, with the hole saw. What might be an idea is to cover the area you are drilling the hole in with masking tape to help keep this to a minimum and then drill a pilot hole for the hole saw first (once you have chosen a suitable position) I think where Rover put them above the radio aperture is a good place. The gauge will have a bevel that will cover any minor chipping anyway. If the dash is good it might be worth buying a brand new hole saw so you know it is good and sharp.

use a fret saw if you have room, small teeth will cause less damage - http://www.amazon.co...words=freat saw

You can get 52mm hole saws. starret do one for metal that has very fine teeth and works very well. Make sure you tape up the front as mentioned above.
