I,ve been running an aldon yellow distributor for several months and I've been very pleased. I was going to swap the aldon ignitor unit from my old 25d unit but the black trigger ring is too small. is this because the aldon 45d shaft is wider?

Probably.  I am sure that the 23/25 series distributors use a completely different Ignitor kit than the 45 series.
