My new outer CV boot seems to have a very loose fit on the axle end of the boot.  I am concerned that it will not clamp snugly to the axle and hence not provide an effective seal.  Is this the usual fit for the outer CV boot?

Wrong boot. That is for the inner pot joint.  It should be like this:

Or like this:

You are correct, I have the boots reversed.  Nonetheless, I have the same concern.  The boot (pot joint) does not fit snugly on the driveshaft.  By contrast, the outer (accordion) CV boot does fit snug on the driveshaft.

It is not a tight fit but it should not rattle around either.

Sorry, i was not paying attention. The inboard (pot joint) boot does not attach to the driveshaft. The boot is inverted inside-out and then mounted with the clamp or cable tie to the pot joint where a groove is to prevent the boot from coming off. The clamp will end up inside the boot. Then the boot goes back inside-in and the larger end installed secured with a clamp or a cable tie.

Make sure to put grease in the driveshaft splines to prevent the driveshaft from getting stuck inside the pot joint with corrosion.
