The engine needs to see the missing tooth 90 degrees before TDC. Where you place the trigger wheel/sensor is irrelivent as long as you do that.

Phil.

so it reads the sensor as Tdc? And the missing tooth has to be 90 degrees before that, is that correct?

Yeah, obviously it depends where you mount the sensor but the missing tooth should pass the sensor 90 degrees before TDC

1. Put your engine at tdc.

2. Put your crank sensor where you prefer.

3. Attach the trigger wheel so the centre of missing tooth gap is 90 degrees clockwise from the centre of sensor.

Most seem to have the sensor sticking out towards the front & mounted on the radiator/engine mounting bracket. Mine is tucked up under the alternator, so it's inside the path of the fan belt and doesn't interfere with replacing it.

I've got the trigger wheels bracket and trigger wheel so the sensor is at the 7/8 position with the gap in the wheel near the tdc Mark. Is this 90btdc or 180 out

without the megajolt plugged in the engine will crank but not start. However with the megajolt plugged in it won't turn over. I turn the key and get a groan from the starter

That sounds correct, I've edited my first reply to try and be clearer. You want the sensor to detect the gap @ 90 degrees before tdc, so if the gap is under the sensor the engine should be 90 before.

Turn it on 90 degrees (clockwise) and the gap will have gone 90 degrees past the sensor while the engine is now at tdc.
