Hi peeps!

I'mdismanteling one of the engine that I bought, 1 of these should have a recently reconditioned gearbox ( 2000 miles run).

Upon dismanteling I noticed that the gearbox is somehow locked?

Here is a video of it :https://www.dropbox....161910.3gp?dl=0

Any idea why? I tried with all gears selected etc. Also tried with the reverse idler at different locations.

I'm a bit stumped here.. :/

thanks!

Haven't seen the vid. Look to see where the selector forks are - bronze half moon channels the synchro hubs run in, under the mainshaft. They should be central to each pair of gears when in neutral, pushed to either side you'll see the dog teeth engage the gear. Have you stripped any of the selector mechanism? Assuming it's a rod change box, the interchange spool* keeps you from selecting more than one gear at a time.

*looks a bit like a tubular key and goes round the shaft the dreaded roll pin goes in to attach the gear stick mechanism.

.....Vid's decided to loaded now, that's not locked. Something must be fouling somewhere, it's all a bit fast 'n blurred but the first motion shaft seems to be fairly solid on the mainshaft. The 3rd gear synchro hub is also in a bit of a state, as if it's been chewing on the selector fork, so maybe a failed bearing at that end?

Wel, I removed the laygear now.

everything turns well then , also everything turns well seperatly so i'm guessing its not a bearing?

narrowed the problem down a bit more : Whe I reinstal the laygear without the trustwashers , I can find a point where everything is fine by moving the laygear horizontally.

So maybe the problem is just a wrong thurstwasher? OR the laygear and the first motionshaft are not compatible? ( unlikely I think?)

Will get a vid of that after dinner

thanks!

Just thinking: if the previous owner changed the diff without torquing everything back correctly( the 2 big nuts) could that cause this?

Yes. The First Motion Shaft can bind on the third motion shaft.

Hmm, on the last vid you can really see the binding between the laygear and the primary shaft gear. ( think the most right is called firs tmotion?)

Almost like an incorrect laygear is fitted ( but I can assure it is the correct one).

Very strange!!!

I'd still suggest giving the First and 3rd Motion Shaft nuts a decent tighten, don't need to be fully torqued up for checking, but they do need to be tight for sure.

It's a little hard for me to see exactly from your vids (only just looked now) but if you look at the 'ears' of each of the baulk (synchro) rings as you rotate it like that, you'll like see one of them is binding up on the cone of the gear, where as the other 3 will 'slip' on the cone. The one that is gripping maybe off spec (I've had a few like this), where the taper angle is wrong, or the OD is undersize. Just replace that one.

They do appear to all be the correct 'matching' gears (they are all a 'Single Line' set).
