I had the wheel off over the weekend and fished out the brake pads. The disc is fine, no warps, the castle nut is tight and the bearing feels fine. Went for a test drive - five minutes in the clonking starts again. :-(

It's not been as bad over the last couple of days but it's still there. Could it be a wearing CV joint?

Remove the damper and go for a (cautious not to fast) run.

Having checked everything else - and given the problem only starts when I've been using the brakes for a bit - I'm reckoning it's a sticking piston knocking against the disc - I'll fish it out when I can, give it a good lubricating and see how that does....

I think I've found the problem. The NEAR-side brake disc is wobbling (although the disc itself is straight as a die and the flange seems fine, so I'm thinking either the bearing, hub or the CV must be suspect) and causing the brake pipe to knock against the car as it pushes against the piston. I think.

She's going in for an MOT tomorrow and I'm getting a new hub and bearing fitted - we'll see if that does it!

Just changed my CV joint after 2 bearing changes and a hub change trying to cure what I thought was a wheel bearing issue. This was a false assumption - I could rock the wheel top/bottom or left/right and see and feel movement at the wheel but not at the joint. It seems that a very small amount of movement within the CV joint is magnified so that it seems the wheel bearing is to blame. I wish I had done this earlier - half the cost of the swivel hub. Swivel hubs do wear so do not rule them out. Drive flanges can be swapped from side to side - if one is worn the symptoms should swap sides.

Problem solved, I think - one new hub and bearing later, the knocking/clicking has gone.I'm assuming that a combination of worn bearing in duff hub was allowing the flange/disc to rotate out of true, causing the pads to make the brake lines knock against something.

But it's gone now, so yay! And no other work required for the MOT, either, so double result! :-)
