hello.

now then i wish to add a rev counter.....before you all say serach i have...but i;m an idiot and couldn't understand half of it

:(

anywho. i got a rev counter from a regular 3 clock dash which i hope to be getting the pod for later on. i want to use my original 2 clocks the speedo and the fuel/temp gauges. then add the rev counter on by itself. but i don't have the foggiest idea how to wire it up,

Posted Image

theres the back of the rev counter. the current dial i have are the two clock ones and its a 1982 Austin Mini. i need a proper idiots guide to adding a rev counter in. were to get power feed from for the rev counter. do i need any fuses or anything. gauge of wire i want to use.

also. on the rev counter there are two big square holes. i reccon their for light as there are no lights in the counter. so i also need to know were to get some lights and how to add them in.....i say lights. i know theres a backlight but theres one at the bottom....what on earths that for?

sorry for asking so many questions but i really have no clue what to do.

Please help me. if you would be so kind.

Cheers

Yep your right they are for lights, but in order fro them to work you will also need the circuit board from a 3 clock (have one going spare), this will also move the indicators from the corners on the 2 clock set up to either side of the fuel/temp gauge on the 3 clock set up.

There should be two wires (forget what colour they are) tucked away behind your existing clocks.
Pretty simple which goes were as they only fit on one of the two.

Right hear are the picks of the 3 clocks I have

First off you'll notice that the circuit board is different, and the indicators are moved more central rather than at the outer corners.
The two bits of tape cover lamp holes that are not used.

hmm...ok. i recone i can swing this without a new bit of pcb stuff. bit of soldering and what have you. all the lights look to be off one thing. i know minispares dose the lights with little holders so thats ok.

still whats the little screw for on mine? i tryed with the bullit connector and the spade connetor on quick and nothing.

The screw attaches and earths the clocks to the circuit board; if you need extra lights with little holders I’ve got a box full as these clock don't work.

Well if you "wires" plan don't work you can have the circuit board as well (one of the few bits that work), it will most probably go in the big box of mini bits I have never to be seen again.

Been reading this topic with interest, as I've got a rev counter to fit to my Mini fairly soon. My Mini Sidewalk didn't come with a rev counter as standard, but having put a three-dial dash in I need to fill the empty space! I bought a 3 dial set off eBay a while back in the hope that I could use the rev counter from that, but unfortunately it was broken so no luck there. I've now found a rev counter and need to fit it, and your explanation of what everything is has been very useful.

A point I've noticed though - not all rev counters are the same. I now have two, a new one and an old one, and the position of everything on the back is different. On my new one the connections are the same as in 1984mini25's pics, but the ones on the eBay set are completely different, and as a result the circuit board is also different. It means I can't use the circuit board from my eBay set to go on my current set, and by the looks of Big_Adam's initial picture I reckon you'll have the same problem. Unless you have the right circuit board to match all three dials, you may well have to resort to fudging the wiring yourself anyway!

With this info I probably won't try putting my rev counter in tomorrow after all - I've got MOT in the afternoon and really can't be bothered with the hastle if I've not got the right circuit board. Hopefully get it in eventually. Big_Adam, have you get yours in yet?

yo,

yeah i got mine all working. in the end i used my 2 original dials in a 3 clock housing then added the revcounter in and t-off a light for iltination. so it all works lovely....well apart from the rev counter sticking from zero. quick tap sorts it out tho so its not a bit problem at all.

only thing i did was add in a gound wire as the other 2 wires were already there.
