Stripping down a a gearbox at the moment and have done everything but I am having a nightmare trying to get the 3rd gear off, I have pushed both of the needle springs in and turned the thrust washers but it just won't lift out, I have tried to line the thrust washer up like is should lift out but it's not,
Anybody got any tips? This is the last of the strip down ready for a rebuild next month and I can't seem to get it out
Cheers

I can see right away where your going wrong.
Try holding your tougue on the otherside.
Nah, sounds like you are going about it right, just gotta keep at it and be patient, they are very neat. To get them off, they not only need to line up with the slots, but also be perfectly on centre.

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong, they can be a bit fiddly. Generally you need to try and hook it out whilst lining it up correctly.

By the sounds of it, it's the second idler you're on about not the 3rd...
The 3rd is the one nearest the end of the shaft which has the bearing on, furthest away from the pinion and main retaining thread. This is held in by one pin and spring...
To remove the 2nd idler, first make sure the 3rd idler is still on the main shaft... you will need to use this for leverage...
Get the idler locking thrust in the position that both the pins are in and the splines on the shaft are lined up with the locking thrust. Place a large flat bladed screwdriver or pry bar, between the 2nd and 3rd idler and apply gentle upward force on the gear by pushing the lever down, while rotating the gear.
The two holes in the cone are for putting the locking ring back in...

That's it all stripped down and cleaned.....I have cleaned the inside of the box and outside with mineral/white spirit(from a compressor spray gun ) and then put compressed air through everything and it's very clean., was wondering what's best to clean the gears and that up, can I use this as well??

Paraffin or old petrol will do a good job, as will brake cleaner, I have a petroleum distillate in my parts washer which shifts most of the grot. Don't be too fussed about getting them shiny clean, as you'll only do that with a chemical dip or blasting.
